First Year Family Nurse Practitioner Student Seeks Enthusiastic Preceptor!

Hello!

My name is Holly Hamm. I’m a new Family Nurse Practitioner student from Sonoma State. I’m looking for a preceptor who can help me build a strong foundation as I take this big step towards becoming a Provider. I have a solid background in nursing, including working the last four and half years in the Emergency Department at Petaluma Valley Hospital. In this environment, I have become adept at triaging patients and doing quick, focused assessments for acute problems. Now, I’m looking forward to going more in depth, as I learn how to help my patients stay well, and manage chronic illnesses.

I am also committed to supporting the underserved in our community. In the Emergency Department, I see way too many people who have untreated or poorly managed chronic illnesses that lead to avoidable complications and a poor quality of life. I would like to do what I can to build strong relationships and connect these patients with resources, so that they are more likely to seek out regular care and maintain a healthier lifestyle.

This coming Fall, October 1 – December 17, will be my first clinical rotation. This will require 80 hours of: observation, history taking, performing physical exams, and discussing cases with my preceptor. I’m hoping to find someone who is excited about teaching and who would love to help me develop my skills and expand my knowledge.

On a personal note, I have 2 sons, one grown and one almost grown. I love to travel and spend my free time outdoors – especially camping, backpacking and diving. Two years ago I started a side business taking teens backpacking and just love getting them out in the wild. I am also learning Spanish and am working towards fluency. After I graduate, I look forward to serving our community in my new role and finding creative ways to combine my career with my other interests.
